Coast Guard Auxiliary to Hold Boating Safety Day

Somerset, MA - The
U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Somerset Flotilla 8-4 will be holding a National Safe
Boating Day 2008 by offering free Vessel Safety Checks (VSC) to boaters on
Saturday, May 24, 2008 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Somerset Marina, 3828
Riverside Ave, Somerset, MA
The Vessel Safety
Check process is easy and can usually be completed in less than 15 minutes,
ensuring a boat operator and their crew still have ample time to enjoy their day
on the water.
Boaters may either trailer their boats to the
Somerset Marina, or arrive via the water and tie up at the Marina dock. Somerset
Marina members may have their vessels examined at their own slip.
Coastie, the
USCGAUX mascot, will be visiting with children from 10:00 am – 12:00pm on
Saturday, May 24. Coastie is the goodwill ambassador of boating safety to
children. He travels around to different events and schools giving children a
much needed glimpse of what safety on the water is all about. By talking to them
and moving around and reacting while telling safe boating messages and stories
he instills a message of safe boating on their young minds.
The National
Boating Safety campaign, which this year runs through July 4, is designed to
help reduce boating fatalities and accidents by generating an awareness of
operator and passenger behavior on the water and to encourage boaters to take
personal responsibility for their own safety and the safety of their passengers
by following four key tenets of safe boating:
-
Always wear your
life jacket.
-
Never boat under
the influence.
-
Take a boating
safety course.
-
Get a free
Vessel Safety Check.
Boating-related
accidents are still far too common in Massachusetts/Rhode Island waterways and
quite often, these accidents could have been easily prevented. A Vessel Safety
Check is an ideal way for trained examiners to help boat operators mitigate
potential safety risks before they head out on the water.
